Victoria Park House II

Victoria Park House II is a compact one-bedroom dwelling set within a wedge-shaped infill site to the side of a semi-detached Victorian townhouse within the Victoria Park Conservation Area. The project sits along the crescent formed by Lauriston Road and Church Crescent, an important urban setting arranged around the Grade II* listed St John of Jerusalem Church (1848). The crescent is characterised by pairs of semi-detached houses separated by gaps formed by the geometry of the street, establishing the rhythm of the crescent while providing framed views back towards the church. Over time many of these gaps have been infilled with single-storey structures, establishing a secondary datum of low-rise ancillary buildings along the crescent.

Replacing a former single-storey garage, the new dwelling follows this established pattern of development, maintaining a subservient scale to the host building while carefully stepping in section to create a varied and generous interior. The building is organised around a central core containing bathroom, storage and utility space, allowing the living, kitchen and sleeping spaces to occupy the perimeter of the plan. Generous floor-to-ceiling heights and subtle variations in internal volume reflect the proportions of the adjoining Victorian house, bringing daylight deep into the plan and establishing a direct relationship with a private rear courtyard garden. Set back from the street to reduce its visual impact, the project supports the long-term adaptation of the existing property, allowing it to evolve alongside changing patterns of occupation while retaining continuity with its immediate context.
